Message from the President of Allegheny County PHL ...
Hello dear pro-life friends,
September 2011 has been a busy month for the Allegheny County PHL! On September 17th, we participated in the South Park Community Days, featuring our educational booth. Life-sized fetal models, a fetal ultrasound, and educational literature were displayed. There seemed to be greater public interest in our information this year - we were able to distribute more literature and five times as many 12-week fetal models than we ever have before! This is good news, because we feel that educating the public about fetal growth and development is a key factor in changing attitudes about abortion. The other, ongoing event we are participating in is the 40 Days for Life campaign being held from September 28th to November 6th. This is a time for the pro-life community of Pittsburgh to pray, fast, stand together in peaceful vigils, and reach out to others in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Lori Snatchko (Secretary and photographer for our chapter) and I attended the “40 Days for Life” kickoff event held September 24th at Phil’s Parking Lot close to Planned Parenthood on Liberty Ave in Pittsburgh. Even though I worked before the event, I felt immediately energized by the spirit of the people gathering selflessly to pray for "the least of these". The music and energy of the band, "Intent" revived me further. Messages from the clergy (Reverend John Patterson, Bishop William Waltersheid, and Pastor Shawn Kirkland) were inspiring once again. Our Pittsburgh Campaign Director, Nikki Bruni, used life-sized fetal models at various stages of development very effectively to demonstrate that abortion of any baby up to the day of delivery must be considered a heinous crime by any thinking person. Once again, Lori captured the inspiring and thoughtful moments well with her photography. At minimum, there have been 54 million abortions in this country since 1973. One fourth of our children are missing! 37,000 of these abortions occur in PA every year. 25% of these are performed in Allegheny County.
So how effective is 40 Days for Life, you may ask? Prior to the Fall 2011 campaign, over 4,313 children had been saved nationwide from abortion — and these are just the ones we know about! In addition:
*53 abortion workers have left the abortion industry. *16 abortion facilities closed their doors following local 40 Days for Life campaigns. *In Pittsburgh, at least 5 mothers decided not to abort during our Spring 2011 40 Days for Life vigil.
And ultimately, we give the glory to our life-giving God. God is moving in this land and He’s moving in Pittsburgh. It warms my heart to see Catholics, Protestants of many denominations, and others come together to fight the spiritual battle that is going on for the lives of the most vulnerable – those most vulnerable being the unborn, and the men and women in crisis, who are struggling to make the right decision about a crisis pregnancy. For this reason, 40 Days for Life’s foundational Bible verse is 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
