Bedford County: A Great County for Mothers & Children According to Pennsylvania Abortions by County, for the period 2000 - 2004, there were 2,706 live births to Bedford County women, and 111 abortions performed on county women. That is 3.9% of Bedford County pregnancies ending in induced abortions. Out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania, Bedford County ranked 60th in the percentage of pregnancies ending in abortion. Only seven counties -- Bradford, Franklin, Fulton, McKean, Potter, Susquehanna, and Tioga -- have lower abortion rates. The most recent information from the Pennsylvania Department of Health tells us that in 2003, 26 Bedford County women resorted to abortion. None of them were under the age of 15. Seven were between 15 and 19; 14 were 20 - 24, 2 were 25 - 29, 2 were 30 - 34, 1 was between 35 and 39, and none were aged 40 or older. Though no abortions are reported as being performed in Bedford County, there is an advertisement for an abortion facility in our Yellow Pages. The ad is for Hillcrest Women's Medical Center, which performed a fatal abortion on Kelly Morse in 1996. Kelly had traveled to Hillcrest from Vermont -- possibly in response to a Yellow Pages ad similar to the one in our own telephone book. Bedford County women deserve to know about this. With only around two dozen abortions per year being done on Bedford County women, we can confidently set a goal of being a county where no woman feels that she must resort to abortion.
