The History of Abortion in America
Those Who Don't Learn From History Are Condemned To Repeat It

Ex-abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson, personally responsible for 75,000 abortions, comes forward in his Confession of an Ex-Abortionist.

As founder of NARAL, the National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws, he outlines the strategy NARAL used to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to issue the decisions that legalized abortion on demand in 1973:

     1. Capture the Media
         a. NARAL advertised fictional polls stating that 60% of Americans were in favor
             of permissive abortion.
         b. NARAL fabricated the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S. "The actual
figure was approaching 100,000 but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was
             1,000,000."
         c. NARAL fabricated the number of women dying from illegal abortions - "was around
200-250 annually. The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000."

     2. Vilify the Catholic Church and its "socially backward ideas" inferring that there were no
         non-Catholic groups opposing abortion.

     3. Insist that the "definition of when life begins is impossible; that the question is a
theological or moral or philosophical one, anything but a scientific one."

Dr. Bernard Nathanson ends by admitting that the motivation was purely for money and with the statement:
"AS A SCIENTIST I KNOW, NOT BELIEVE, KNOW THAT HUMAN LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION"

Abortion History Timeline from National Right to Life
This timeline begins with the introduction of the The American Law Institute model penal code for abortion, in 1959.

America's Abortion Timeline
Once upon a time, the United States was pro-life. A timeline showing how America gradually turned towards abortion.

Abortion Before Legalization
The Transition Period from 1950 to 1970
The campaign for abortion as a right gained ground in the United States.

The Impact of Legalization
Advocates of legal abortion like to claim that legalization reduced maternal mortality and protects women's lives.
  • The Post-Legalization Period after widespread legalization began in 1970's.

  • Who to Thank for Public Health Miracles
The good news is that in the 20th century, maternal and infant mortality fell over 90%. Who accomplished this public health wonder, that abortion advocates love to take credit for?

  • Safe-n-Legal in the 20th Century
Roughly 90% of pre-legalization abortions were done by physicians. After legalization, they could hang out their shingles. What happens to the safety of physician-induced abortions when the threat of going to prison for botching them is all but removed?

  • Inventors on the Bench looks at why.
Why has the past decade seen a flurry of laws against third-trimester abortions, and a concerted effort to block those laws?

Supreme Court Decisions
Decisions that paved the way to unrestricted abortion, and other rulings affecting the right, 1965-2000.

Abortion Statistics
How many abortions are performed in the United States? There's no precise answer. But there are reasonable estimates.
