Pray for peace in Ukraine
God of Comfort, send your Spirit to encompass all those whose lives are torn apart by violence and death in Israel and Palestine. You are the Advocate of the oppressed and the One whose eye is on the sparrow. Let arms reach out in healing, rather than aggression. Let hearts mourn rather than militarize. God of Justice, give strength to those whose long work for a just peace might seem fruitless now. Strengthen their resolve. Do not let them feel alone. Show us how to support their work and bolster their courage. Guide religious leaders to model unity and reconciliation across lines of division. Guide political leaders to listen with their hearts as they seek peace and pursue it. Help all people choose the rigorous path of just peace and disavow violence. God of Love, we lift up Palestine and Israel — its people, its land, its creatures. War is a monster that consumes everything in its path. Peace is a gift shared at meals of memory with Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Let us burn incense, not children. Let us break bread, not bodies. Let us plant olive groves, not cemeteries. We beg for love and compassion to prevail on all your holy mountains. God of Hope, we lift up the cities of the region: Gaza City and Tel Aviv, Ramallah and Ashkelon, Deir El Balah and Sderot, so long divided, yet so filled with life and creativity. Come again to breathe peace on your peoples that all may recognize you. God of Mercy, even now work on the hearts of combatants to choose life over death, reconciliation over retaliation, restoration over destruction. Help us resist antisemitism in all its forms, especially in our own churches. All people, Israelis and Palestinians, deserve to live in peace and unafraid, with a right to determine their future together. God of the Nations, let not one more child or elder be sacrificed on altars of political expediency. Keep safe all people from unjust leaders who would exploit vulnerability for their own distorted ends. Give wise discernment to those making decisions to pursue peace. Provide them insight into fostering well-being, freedom, and thriving for all. Teach all of us to resolve injustices with righteousness, not rockets. Guard our hearts against retaliation, and give us hearts for love alone. Strengthen our faith in you, O God of All Flesh, even when we don’t have clear answers, so that we may still offer ourselves nonviolently for the cause of peace. Amen.

ST. ANDREW ADORATION CHAPEL, 1621 Ferndale Ave, Johnstown: If you are in need of healing, time to pray for others or some peace and quiet with our Lord who is longing for you to visit, then the Adoration Chapel is the place for you! We are constantly looking to add adorers to our lineup as well as substitutes to fill in when a committed adorer cannot make a scheduled shift. Each week has 168 hours. The chapel is open Sunday afternoon-Saturday morning each week. Consider giving one hour to our Lord in spending time with Him. One does not need to be a member of St Andrew Parish in order to visit or commit in any way. Currently, we are most in need of the early morning hours on Wednesday, and 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM on Thursday mornings. If you are wondering how to find substitutes when needed, please know that we have an amazing group of over 30 people who generously fill in all hours of the night and day. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: Connect with your Creator, Redeemer, and Spiritual Guide in a stress-free environment at the Eucharistic Adoration every First Friday of the month from 9:30AM until 5:30PM at St. Francis of Assisi Church. It is important that each ½ hour or hour have two adorers to adore and protect the Blessed Sacrament.
Our Sunday readings call us to love as Christ loves. This request from our Lord is no small endeavor. It is something we must work at every day in every moment. When we put it at the forefront of our minds and hearts, and strive to live it out each day, it will transform our lives and impact others too.
As St. John tells us in our Second Reading, it is “not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.” Recall that God loved us first, not because of what we did for him but because He created us out of love. His love for us is pure and radical. In our gospel, Jesus says, “Love one another as I have loved you.” The ways Jesus has loved us and continues to love us are endless.
Look at each moment and think, “How can I better love Jesus right now?” or “How can I lay down my life in this moment?” for it is in loving Christ that we will better love others, and it is in loving others that we love Christ Himself.
Forty days after Jesus’ glorious resurrection, our Lord ascended into heaven. Oh Lord, we commemorate the day of Your ascension, long with the many things You did here on earth. Your scripture declares that whoever believes in the works that You did on earth will do even greater things because Your Son returned to You in heaven. I thank You for giving us divine authority to be more like Jesus, I walk in Your power, in Jesus’ Name, Amen. (John 14:12)
THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION IS ON THURSDAY, MAY 9. It is a holy day of obligation. Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 AM at St. Clare of Assisi Church and at 6:30 PM at Resurrection Church. The parish offices will be closed on this day.
There will be no weekday Masses scheduled Monday through Friday, May 13 through 17, and Monday through Wednesday, May 20 through 22. Exposition and Benediction scheduled for Monday, May 13 is also cancelled. Weekday Mass will resume on Friday, May 24, with an 8:00 AM Mass at Resurrection Church.
THE 2024 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES DRIVE. As part of the Eucharistic Revival in the Catholic Church in America, please join the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown in celebrating the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and welcoming pilgrims from the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage to our diocese on June 9, 10, and 11, 2024.
Join pilgrims from the Seton Route, who will be making their way to the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, for three days of special Masses, witness talks, Eucharistic processions, and other spiritual opportunities here in our diocese.
The faithful are invited and encouraged to be part of this special opportunity in our Diocesan Church. The diocese extends a special invitation to 2024 First Holy Communicants to attend the Masses and join the Eucharistic processions wearing their First Holy Communion attire, along with their families. FAITH SHARING: The faith-sharing series Women of the Bible is being suspended for the summer months. The series will resume in the fall.
RESURRECTION PARISH/ST. CLARE PARISH GOLFERS:? It is that time of the year for our monthly golf outing. Golfing will begin on Wednesday, May 8 at Oakbrook Golf Club, Jennerstown, PA with a 5:00 PM tee time for 9 holes of golf in scramble format, with carts and food after play. Put a team together and join an evening of fun, laughter, and, of course, golfing. Remember, your team does not need to be a member of either parish, so invite your friends to come and have fun. Men and women are invited to a community spotlight on Habitat for Humanity on Saturday., May 18 at 1:00 PM in the Resurrection Oratory Hall. Learn about this organization and their success, current projects, and needs. Liturgical ministry refresher training for current and new ministers of both parishes will be occurring. The first refresher training will be for Eucharistic Ministers. Please look to future bulletins for dates and times.
Our parishes continue our renewed commitment to adult formation. We will be taking a break over the summer months but will start back up in the fall. Details will be in future bulletins for formation opportunities.
The potluck dinner at St. Clare’s is being rescheduled. Members of St. Clare’s and Resurrection Parishes are invited! Everyone is welcome to attend and share their culinary delights! Look to future bulletins for new date, time, and further details.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a prayer that was revealed by Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska. It is recited using ordinary Rosary beads of five decades and is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska and followed by a closing prayer. YOUNG ADULT GROUP: March was our one-year anniversary. We have grown to almost 100 members averaging 40+/- per meeting including special needs young adults and members from as far as Cumberland, Md. Mid-April we hosted our first Benediction and Board Games which was a success. Upcoming events include a Bonfire and Rosary at Maura’s house on Friday, May 10 at 6:00 PM; Theology on Tap at the Boulevard Grill on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:00 PM with Fr. * JOHNSTOWN WALK OF HOPE: The Frassati Group, a ministry inspired by the life of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, is forming a team to participate in the Johnstown Walk of Hope. The Johnstown Walk of Hope is a nonprofit organization with the goal of raising money for patients with a cancer diagnosis. The money goes to support patient expenses, which include medical testing, treatment, travel, medications, and some household expenses. All donations support patients who receive care locally. * THE HEALING PATCH CHILDREN’S GRIEF PROGRAM is recruiting new volunteers to work with grieving children and their families at centers in Altoona and Ebensburg. The Healing Patch is a free peer support program for children and their families who have suffered the death of a significant person, and volunteers are the heart of the Healing Patch. While volunteers must understand they cannot “fix” what has happened, they can facilitate activities to help children and adults connect and share in a safe and welcoming environment. * ANNUAL VISITATION SPRING BASKET PARTY: The annual parish basket party will be held on Sunday, May 5th. The doors will open at 11:30 AM and food will be available at noon. A light luncheon will be served, consisting of sloppy Joes, pasta salad, desserts, and drinks. The baskets will be called at 1:00 PM. We will be selling entrance tickets for the basket party in the vestibule at $10.00 a ticket.
