Pilgrimage with Mary

A Pilgrimage with Mary, Our Model Disciple October

Last October, Pope John Paul II issued an apostolic letter entitled Rosarium Virginis Mariae (The Rosary of the Virgin Mary). In this pastoral letter, he dedicated the calendar year from October 2002 to 2003 as the Year of the Rosary.

In light of this proclamation and by virtue of the addition to the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries - the new "Mysteries of Light" - the Diocese of Juneau is excited to sponsor and present:
"A Pilgrimage with Mary, Our Model Disciple"
October 17 - 19, 2003.

The event will take place primarily at St. Paul's Church (in Juneau). A flyer is available, which includes pertinent information and a registration form. There will be NO registration fee for this weekend event. Watch the Inside Passage for further information and updates.

Five articles by Robert Daly in Preparation for the Rosary Pilgrimage and Novenas
Sunday, July 13 - "Novena - Origin and Practice."
The word novena derives from the Latin word novem meaning nine, which consists of nine days of prayer. Novena finds it roots in ancient Roman times were special events that ran for nine days existed. The Roman custom of a nine-day event was transferred into Christian time marked by private and public prayer devotion. Primarily associated with suffering and mourning the novena bestowed a sense of hope and strength in the face of loss or the death of a loved one, as a petition of prayer. Pope Benedict XIV (Praecipuum 1741) declared an official nine days of mourning for deceased pontiffs. This became commonly known as the "Pope's Novena."

In the Middle Ages, novenas extended coverage to include preparation. The tenth council of Toledo (656) declared that a novena of prayer was a fitting means of preparation for Christmas. This custom began to spread rapidly throughout France and Spain. Novenas of preparation, prayer and Masses began to become commonplace in Europe, especially in Italy through the seventeenth century. To this day novenas in honor of God and as a means of intercession through our Lady and the saints are a noted medium or prayerful preparation for Church feasts, pilgrimages and petitions; as a source of hope and strength.
As we journey towards "A Pilgrimage with Mary, Our Model Disciple," may our novenas of preparation be opportunities to contemplate Christ through the guiding hands of His Mother, Mary.

Sunday, July 20 - "The Mysteries of the Rosary"
The Holy Father's apostolic letter "Rosarium Virginis Mariae," October 2002 explains the reason and bestowal of the new rosary of the Mysteries of Light, and Year of the Rosary (Oct. 2002 - Oct. 2003). The five Mysteries of Light contribute to the tally of twenty mysteries of the rosary, centered on prayerfully contemplating particular meditations for the life of Christ. The twenty mysteries are organized into four particular rosaries containing five mysteries each, Joyful, Luminous (or Light), Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries.
While it is not wrong to pray and contemplate a particular rosary on any given day, the Holy Father in his Apostolic Letter reiterates that certain days of the week are pertinent for particular rosaries.

The Joyful Mysteries: Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, finding the Child Jesus in the Temple, are especially suited for prayer for Mondays and Saturdays (optionally also on the Sundays of Advent and the Christmas Season).

The Luminous Mysteries: Baptism of Jesus, Wedding at Cana, Proclaiming the Kingdom, Transfiguration, Institution of the Eucharist, are especially suited for prayer on Thursday.

The Sorrowful Mysteries: Agony in the Garden, Scourging at the Pillar, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, The Crucifixion, are especially suited for prayer on Tuesdays and Fridays (optionally also on the Sundays of Lent).

The Glorious Mysteries: The Resurrection, The Ascension, Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption, The Coronation, are especially suited for prayer on Wednesdays and Sundays.

The appropriate days for praying the rosaries that accompany the Novena prayers during our three Novenas, are suggested usage as preparation for "A Pilgrimage with Mary, Our Model Disciple."

Sunday, July 27 - "Three novenas in honor of Our Lady"
From August 7 to October 7, 2003 three novenas will be prayed by the people of the Diocese of Juneau and offered up as a preparation for the pilgrimage event in Juneau (Oct. 17 - 19, 2003). The novenas may be prayed in the home as a family, as an individual, in the Church, in a church prayer group that may be already in place in your parish or mission, or in what ever normal capacity is present. As you pray and contemplate the Mysteries of the Rosary and the novena prayer each day of each novena, you will be joined in solidarity with people across the diocese. Each Novena will end on a particular feast day of our Lady:

1. From August 7 - 15 a novena in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

2. From August 31 - September 8 a novena in honor of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

3. From September 29 - October 7 a novena in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary.

This time of prayerful preparation will also be an opportunity for all to formulate your prayer intentions for the pilgrimage event. These intentions will be added with each pilgrim's intentions and will collectively be prayed for during the event.

Sunday, August 3 - "Prayer Intentions"
During the time of the three novenas (August 7 - October 7, 2003) it is also intended that praying the rosary and novena prayer each day will present an opportunity to examine your life situation. We all have concerns to pray for whether they are personal or for someone else. As sinners, we depend and rely on God's grace. The circumstances and the environment you find yourself in will present the foundation to reflect on your needs and the needs of others around you. Formulating your intention(s) from prayerful reflection will furnish authentic concerns, becoming your intention petitions for the pilgrimage event. You are invited to bring or send your intentions to the Diocese of Juneau so that they may be added to the intentions of all who are making the pilgrimage journey!

Sunday, August 10 - "Gathering Prayer Intentions"
The prayer Intentions that you have formed from the preparation period of novenas (August 7 - October 7, 2003) may be mailed to the Diocesan Chancery @ 415 Sixth Street, Juneau, AK 99801. Or they may be sent with the "send back" portion for Registration and Rosary Pledge portion of the brochure guide to the event, "A Guide to prepare…A Pilgrimage with Mary, Our Model Disciple" (available from all Parish/Mission Churches throughout the diocese. You may also email your prayer intentions to junodio@gci.net where they will be collected and combined with all others to be offered at the 11:00 am Mass at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on October 19th. Prayer intentions may be signed or anonymous.
Don't forget that each person who takes part in the pilgrimage journey, for example by praying the novenas, coming to the event in Juneau, in part or whole is constituted a pilgrim. You might possibly never leave your home, but you still can take part in the pilgrimage journey!

A Pilgrimage with Mary, Our Model Disciple: How to Pray the Novenas
As the first of three novenas approaches, in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 7 - 15, 2003), the question "how to pray the novena?" must be addressed. The preparation brochure has now been mailed to households across the diocese. In the Rosary Pledge section all are invited to indicate in what way the rosary (or part of) will be prayed. This then can be mailed with the registration and intentions for the pilgrimage.
By praying the rosary of the day or part of it (Joyful Mysteries - Mondays and Saturdays, Luminous Mysteries - Thursdays, Sorrowful Mysteries - Tuesdays and Fridays, Glorious Mysteries - Wednesdays and Sundays) accompanied by the recitation of the novena prayer at the end of the rosary each day for nine days, you are fully participating in the novena. The rosary and novena prayer combined make up the Novena. Allow the fruit of your prayer and contemplation on the Mysteries bring forward your intentions for the pilgrimage.

3 NOVENA PRAYERS

Dear Lady assumed into heaven. Pray with us! Amen.
