The Supreme Court legalized abortion through all stages of pregnancies for any reason on January 22, 1973. The March for Life takes place on the anniversary of the Supreme Court decisions except when the 22nd falls on a weekend when Congress is not in session.

As founder of NARAL, the National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws, ex-abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson outlines the strategy NARAL used to convince the US Supreme Court to issue the decisions that legalized abortion on demand in 1973.
NARAL repeatedly fed lies to the media. NARAL advertised fictional polls stating 60% of Americans were in favor of permissive abortion. NARAL inflated the number of yearly illegal abortions from less than 100,000 to 1 million and the number of deaths from illegal abortions from 200-250 per year to 10,000.
NARAL insisted that the "definition of when life begins is impossible; that the question is a theological or moral or philosophical one, anything but a scientific one." NARAL wanted to make it debatable and therefore a citizen’s right to believe what he wants to.
Dr. Bernard Nathanson ends by admitting that the motivation was purely for money and the statement:
"AS A SCIENTIST I KNOW, NOT BELIEVE, KNOW THAT HUMAN LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION"
